A Europa Nostra Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the Archaeological Site of Saint Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland . Major research and excavation works underneath the cathedral and the surrounding streets were carried out over an impressive period of 30 years (1976-2006). The works uncovered remains of over 2000 years of urban development in the historic centre of Geneva. In 2006 the site was opened to the public. It has been sensitively adapted to accommodate visitors and an exemplary presentation has been developed, using a variety of mediums to showcase an important urban archaeology site of European and world importance.
The project is highly valued for the quality of the excavation works on a most difficult site, and for the integrated approach and excellent collaboration between archaeologists, conservators and architects.

Une Médaille Europa Nostra danslaCatégorie 1 - Conservation a été donnée au site archéologique de la cathédrale Saint-Pierre à Genève, Suisse. Des travaux de recherche et de fouilles de grande envergure sous la cathédrale et les rues environnantes ont été entrepris sur une période impressionnante de 30 ans (1976-2006). Les travaux ont mis à jour des vestiges du développement urbain dans le centre historique de Genève datant de plus de 2.000 ans. Le site a été ouvert au public en 2006. Il a fait l’objet d’aménagements subtils pour recevoir des visiteurs et une présentation exemplaire a été mise au point, laquelle, par le biais d’un large éventail de supports, met en valeur un site archéologique urbain qui revêt une grande importance tant au plan européen qu’international.
Le projet est tenu en haute estime de par la qualité des fouilles sur un site particulièrement difficile ainsi que pour l’approche intégrée et l’excellente collaboration entre les archéologues, les conservateurs et les architectes.
