A Medal in Category 2 - Conservation has been given to the restoration, reconstruction and adaptation of the Max Liebermann Villa and Garden in Berlin-Wannsee, Germany. Thorough study of numerous surviving documents provided the basis for an authentic and meticulously detailed restoration of the estate of the painter Max Liebermann, which from 1935 onwards was no longer maintained in line with its intended philosophy and suffered from general neglect. Views of the house and garden that Liebermann painted enabled the restorers to recreate the bright atmosphere of the site. The residence was converted into a museum of the painter’s work which opened in 2006.
The restoration of the villa and garden is particularly admired as a Gesamtkunstwerk, encompassing architecture, interior design and landscaping. It deserves special acknowledgement because it is the result of a private initiative, realised to a large extent through voluntary engagement.

Un examen approfondi des nombreux documents ayant survécu a fourni la base d’une restauration authentique et méticuleuse jusque dans les plus infimes détails du domaine du peintre Max Liebermann, lequel depuis 1935 n'était plus maintenu comme cela avait été voulu au départ et souffrait d’un manque d’entretien général. Les vues de la maison et du jardin peintes par Liebermann ont permis aux restaurateurs de recréer l’ambiance radieuse du site. La résidence a été transformée en un musée abritant les œuvres du peintre qui a ouvert ses portes en 2006.
La restauration de la villa et du jardin est particulièrement admirée comme un Gesamtkunstwerk, englobant l’architecture, la décoration intérieure et le paysagisme. Elle mérite une mention spéciale dans la mesure où elle est due à une initiative privée, réalisée dans une large mesure grâce à des actions bénévoles.
