A Medal in Category 3 - Dedicated Service has been given to Emil Reinier van Brederode from The Netherlands. Emil van Brederode has held numerous positions in the field of conservation of historic buildings since the early 1970s. Over the years he added the safeguard of landscape and urban planning to that field and lifted it to a European and international level. He worked for the Dutch umbrella organisation, Nationaal Contact Monumenten (National Contact Point for Monuments), and initiated various other platforms and umbrella organisations focussing on issues such as Industrial Heritage and Historic Churches. In 1987 he started the Open Monuments Day in The Netherlands and in 1991 he played a key role in bringing this initiative to a European level by organising and coordinating the European Heritage Days, now functioning as a joint initiative of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
The career of Emil van Brederode is admired for the numerous initiatives for the safeguard of cultural heritage in The Netherlands and in Europe . His creativity in setting up programmes to raise awareness of the importance and the values of cultural heritage, particularly the European Heritage Days, is exceptional.

Emil van Brederode a exercé de nombreuses fonctions dans le domaine de la conservation des bâtiments historiques depuis le début des années soixante-dix. Il a au fil des années rajouté la sauvegarde des paysages et l'urbanisme à ce secteur et l'a élevé à un niveau européen et international. Il a travaillé pour l'organisation coupole néerlandaise Nationaal Contact Monumenten (Point de contact national pour les monuments), et a mis en place diverses autres plateformes et organisations coupoles axées sur ces questions comme le Patrimoine industriel et les Églises historiques. Il a lancé en 1987 la Journée ouverte des monuments aux Pays-Bas et a joué un rôle majeur en 1991 pour hisser cette initiative au niveau européen en organisant et en coordonnant les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine, qui sont désormais devenus un projet commun de l’Union européenne et du Conseil de l’Europe.
La carrière d’Emil van Brederode fait l’objet d’admiration pour ses nombreuses initiatives en faveur de la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel aux Pays-Bas et en Europe. Sa créativité dans l’établissement de programmes visant à sensibiliser l'opinion sur l'importance et les valeurs du patrimoine culturel, en particulier les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine, est exceptionnelle.
