One of the three Prizes in Category 1 - Conservation has been awarded to the restoration and adaptive re-use of the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Extensive historical research into the building techniques and the initial colours used in the building, established an essential knowledge of the original qualities of this early and most important example of Modern Movement architecture in Europe from the late 1920s. This knowledge was the basis for the restoration and adaptive re-use of the complex. The unique heritage values of the buildings have been outstandingly conserved, including the at the time innovative building technologies, such as curtain walls. Necessary transformations and new additions to convert the buildings into the ‘Van Nelle Design Factory’, providing office space for the creative and design industries, are sensitive and highly reversible and seem to fit naturally.
The project is highly appreciated as an exemplary approach to the restoration of, and finding new uses for, an iconic building of European and world importance.

L’un des trois Prix dans laCatégorie 1 - Conservation a été attribué à la restauration et à la reconversion appropriée de l’usine Van Nelle à Rotterdam, Pays-Bas. Des recherches historiques approfondies dans les techniques de construction et dans les couleurs utilisées initialement dans le bâtiment ont fourni des connaissances essentielles quant aux qualités originales de cet exemple précoce et capital du courant architectural du Mouvement moderne en Europe de la fin des années vingt. Ces connaissances ont constitué le fondement de la restauration et de la reconversion ad hoc de ce complexe. Les valeurs uniques touchant au patrimoine du bâtiment ont été remarquablement préservées, y compris les technologies innovantes à l’époque, à l’instar des murs rideaux. Les transformations indispensables et les nouvelles adjonctions visant à transformer les bâtiments en ‘Usine du Design Van Nelle’, mettant des espaces de bureaux à la disposition des industries de la création et du design, non seulement ont été réalisées avec délicatesse et sont pleinement réversibles, mais semblent s’insérer naturellement dans le décor.
Le projet est hautement apprécié comme une approche exemplaire de la restauration et d’une reconversion réussie d’un édifice emblématique d'envergure européenne et internationale.
