A Europa Nostra Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration, reconstruction and re-use of Kaliningrad Cathedral in the Russian Federation, for having resurrected the city’s cathedral which had been destroyed during the Second World War. Originally erected in the centre of old Königsberg in 1332, nothing but the ruins of the great Gothic church’s brick walls had survived the war until a German-Russian initiative restored the edifice to its original form. The historical Wallenroth Library in the cathedral’s western tower now once again serves as a research centre. With the installation of two new organs, an important pre-war tradition has been revived which imbues this cathedral with new cultural life through musical events and a conservatory for organists.
The restoration, the reconstruction and the new function as a cultural centre are highly valued for preventing the irrevocable loss of this symbolically important cathedral.

Une Médaille Europa Nostra dans la Catégorie 1 - Conservation a été donnée à la restauration, reconstruction et réutilisation de la cathédrale de Kaliningrad dans la fédération russe pour avoir ressuscité la cathédrale de la ville qui avait été détruite au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Érigée à l’origine au centre de la vieille ville de Königsberg en 1332, seules les ruines des murs en brique de la grande église gothique avaient survécu à la guerre jusqu’à ce qu’une initiative germano-russe vienne restaurer l’édifice dans sa forme d’origine. La bibliothèque historique Wallenroth dans le clocher ouest de la cathédrale sert à nouveau de centre de recherches. Avec l’installation de deux nouveaux orgues, une tradition importante d’avant-guerre a été réintroduite, ce qui confère à cette cathédrale une nouvelle vie culturelle par le biais d'événements musicaux et d’un conservatoire pour les organistes.
La restauration, la reconstruction et sa nouvelle fonction en tant que centre culturel sont hautement appréciés pour avoir évité la perte irrémédiable de cette cathédrale dotée d’une valeur symbolique capitale.
