A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration of the building and collections of the Museo Cerralbo in Madrid, Spain. The Marquis de Cerralbo, a scholar, traveller, politician, collector and Maecenas, built his mansion to house his extensive collection of works of art. A exemplary member of late 19th and early 20th century high society, he bequeathed his house and art collection to the Spanish state for the education and enjoyment of the whole of society. The project included the restoration of the interior decorations of the mansion and of the entire art collection which was reinstalled in its original setting, returning the house to its intended character, now in the form of a House Museum.
The project is especially valued for allowing the public to appreciate the spirit of collecting in the belle époque period when the house was built, and to appreciate its founder.

Le marquis de Cerralbo, un érudit, voyageur, politicien, collectionneur et mécène, a construit cet hôtel particulier pour héberger son immense collection d’œuvres d’art. Un membre exemplaire de la haute société de la fin du XIXe et du début du XXe siècles, il légué sa maison et sa collection d’œuvres d’art à l’État espagnol pour l’éducation et le plaisir de toute la société. Le projet comprenait la restauration des décorations intérieures de l’hôtel particulier et de la collection d’œuvres d’art tout entière qui a été réinstallée dans son cadre d’origine, rendant à la maison le caractère qui lui avait été dévolu, désormais sous la forme d’une maison musée.
Le projet est particulièrement apprécié dans la mesure où il permet au public d’admirer l’esprit de la collection lors de la Belle Époque, au moment où la maison a été bâtie et d’honorer son fondateur.
