Reconstruction or New Construction of Medieval Castles in the 19th Century
This year’s Meeting of the Europa Nostra Scientific Council took place in Marksburg and Braubach am Rhein (Germany) from 24 to 28 September 2006 and dealt with the “Reconstruction or new Construction of Medieval Castles in the 19th Century”. It was organised by Joachim Zeune, Head of the Scientific Council of Deutsche Burgenvereinigung and Elise Peller of the Europäische Burgeninstitut at Philippsburg and hosted by the Deutsche Burgenvereinigung and Europäisches Burgeninstitut. Eight Members of the Scientific Council, also acting as Europa Nostra Jury Members, met on 23 September to review this year’s entries in Category 2 of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards, and chose the winning projects. On the first day of Scientific Council Meeting, Europa Nostra Vice-President Alexander Fürst zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn (also President of the German Castles Association) welcomed the participants and introduced the aims and activities of the Deutsche Burgenvereinigung and the Europäische Burgeninstitut. Joachim Hofmann-Göttig (State Secretary for Culture of Rheinland Pfalz) spoke about culture and tourism. Andrea Schuler, Executive President of Europa Nostra praised the work of the members of the Scientific Council and their contributions to furthering the objectives of Europa Nostra. Europa Nostra UK Annual Conference and Forum
Oxford, United Kingdom, 17 – 19 September 2006
The Annual General Meeting and conference held in Oxford University on September 17-19 was very successful. Jelka Pirkovic (Member of Europa Nostra’s Management Committee) gave the Annual Duncan Sandys Lecture and set the international scene for the conference in her paper on the challenges of restoring Baroque gardens in her country, illustrated with a series of fascinating case studies. The conference on the theme of “Designed Gardens and Landscapes in Britain”, also attended by Europa Nostra’s Executive President Andrea Schuler, followed on the second day with seven excellent contributions from European experts in Garden History. Anthea Case, Chairman of Heritage Link, presented the Heritage Lottery Fund’s role in historic parks. Georgio Galletti, Professor of Garden Restoration at Florence University, spoke of the influence of the Italian Renaissance on British garden design. Jan Woudstra from Sheffield University continued the theme in his paper on ‘William and Mary and the spread of the new Dutch style’. Marc Schoellen’s paper asked the question “How natural was the French garden in the 18th century?”. David Jacques discussed the impact of English 18th century taste on European gardens. Brent Elliott from the Royal Horticultural Society presented the evolving ideas of gardening throughout the 19th century as expressions of art not nature. John Watkins, Head of Gardens with English Heritage, continued the international theme, but brought the debate up-to-date in a discussion about the process of re-engagement with gardens by every generation.
First-class honours go to Lester Borley, Peter Collins and Michael Balston, members of the Europa Nostra Council for the flawless organisation of this 3-day event.
