15th edition of the European Heritage Days
Saint Petersburg, 21 – 23 September 2006
Successful events taking place during the Russian Federation ’s Presidency of the Ministers of the Council of Europe, marked the 15th edition of the European Heritage Days in the stunning setting of the World Heritage City of St Petersburg. An opening Ceremony was held in the Theatre of the Hermitage Museum on 21 September and a Colloquy on “The Values of Europe’s Cultural Heritage” was held in the Catherine Palace “Tsarskoye Selo” on 22 September. The first European Heritage Days to take place in the Russian Federation were launched by a prestigious Ceremony in the Theatre of the Hermitage Museum on Thursday evening, 21 September.
The aims of the colloquy were to explore the values of Europe ’s cultural heritage for its citizens, its countries, its cities and villages, as well as for Europe ’s future in the modern world. It was also to illustrate the importance of Russian cultural heritage as an integral part of Europe ’s cultural heritage. The need for ever closer European cooperation between public authorities and civil society were demonstrated and the “Declaration of Tsarskoye Selo” was produced and approved, stating the importance of Europe’s Cultural Heritage and calling for stronger and more intense activities to promote it.

Annual Meeting of the European Heritage Days National Coordinators
Venice, Italy, 2 December 2006
Europa Nostra, in its capacity as the Liaison Office for the European Heritage Days, a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Union, participated in the annual meeting of the European Heritage Days National Coordinators, which was held in Venice, Italy, the 2nd December. The National EHD Coordinators exchanged views and experiences with the representatives of the Secretariat of the Council of Europe and of Europa Nostra. They presented and evaluated the activities of this years’ edition of the EHD and looked forward to the future improvement and widening of the event. Europa Nostra strongly advocated that the European dimension of this event should be further highlighted at the national level. In his introduction, Europa Nostra Vice President Denis de Kergorlay looked towards the future of the European Heritage Days and made a strong plea towards the future strengthening of the European dimension of the European Heritage Days, not only in terms of its geographic spread, but also in terms of its content. Next year, the European event marking the European Heritage Days will take place in Belgrade, Serbia, in September 2007, during Serbia’s presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The next annual meeting of the national coordinators will be held in Sibiu, Romania in November 2007.

On the opening evening the stand was visited by the Presidents of the major French heritage organisations and also by French Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres. On the occasion of the Salon, Europa Nostra had organised, together with the French Ministry of Culture and with Relais Culture Europe a round table discussion titled “Towards a European Agenda on Cultural Heritage” on 9 November 2006.
