THE CONCERT FOR EUROPE IN THE CLAIRIERE DE L’ARMISTICE
AN EXCEPTIONNAL EVENT
As part of the 26th edition of the Festival des Forêts, will be held Friday, June 15, 2018, an exceptional concert in the Clairière de l’Armistice in Compiegne. In this place which symbolizes centuries of “European civil wars”, this concert will recall that the European construction brought peace and will illustrate the Europe of Culture.
A historic place
The clearing of the Armistice, in the forest of Compiègne, 85 km north of Paris, celebrates the end of the Great war. It is a majestic place where the specters of millions of victims are perceptible, and where the aggressive phrases and symbols against the German people create surprise. If its first reason of being is to be a tribute to the dead, it also summarizes what has been the history of Europe for several centuries: fragile armistices between conflicts..
An exceptional concert
For the first time since the construction of this place of memory, will be held a concert promising great emotions. The pieces of music played by the Republican Guard Harmony Orchestra will make the idea of European culture palpable, for classical music is one of its most beautiful incarnations. The literary texts and testimonials of Leibniz Kolleg students from Tübingen will illustrate the reasons for loving Europe and highlight the common culture that underpins it. The guided visit of the clearing and a guided walk in the forest from the church of Rethondes will be offered to the public before the concert.
The organizer and the partners
In the particular context of the 1918 Armistice Centenary, the Forest Festival this year chose the theme of Storm and Lull, a metaphor for peace after the war. The Concert for Europe will introduce the Forest Festival. It is organized in partnership with the City of Compiègne, the Association of the Memorial of the Armistice and the association Parlons d’Europe (former auditors of the Cycle of High European Studies). It received the label of the mission of the Centenary of the World War I and the patronage of the French National Commission for UNESCO.
