Saving Europe’s Endangered Heritage

Europa Nostra campaigns side by side with our members, organisations and individuals, to oppose threats to cultural heritage objects and sites from all over Europe. Saving endangered heritage, be they monuments, buildings or landscapes, lies at the heart of Europa Nostra mission. We aim to engage our members, policy and decision makers at all levels of government and in all manner of businesses, as well as the media and the public at large, in noticing the imminent danger so much of Europe’s cultural assets face, and in joining in our actions to defend and protect these unique treasures which enhance the quality of Europeans’ lives.

During the last months, Europa Nostra has actively campaigned to:

- Rosia Montana in Romania: again under threat

- Stop Extension to the Stockholm City Library (October 2009)

- Protect the historic city walls around Prague from the Blanka Tunnel project (May-June 2009)

Europa Nostra is setting up a structured Heritage at Risk Scheme to better campaign in favour of Europe’s endangered heritage, as a complement to its already highly successful Awards Scheme which we run in partnership with the European Commission. At its meeting on 22 January 2009, EN’s Council endorsed the proposal and plans for a fully fledged Heritage at Risk Scheme which will formalise EN’s campaigns which so far have occurred ad hoc in response to requests from its members. The Scheme will be backed by a panel of experts and will have 2 main streams, including a methodology for dealing with requests for assistance and emergency campaigns, plus a proactive arm to actively campaign to protect Europe’s most endangered heritage monuments and sites. The plan will be developed in 2009, preparing for its launch in early 2010.

Send us your concerns and report cases of endangered heritage in your locality, region or country!
