European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards
Winners 2003
Europa Nostra’s President, HRH the Prince Consort of Denmark, and Mr Harald Hartung, Head of Culture Unit at the European Commission, presented the awards to 41 laureates from 18 countries. The levels of the laureates’ prizes were revealed at the ceremony, including the six monetary prizes of €10,000.

For the perseverance leading to the rescue of an outstanding piece of
architecture from the modern movement, and for the excellent restoration
of the building in a manner which reveals its extraordinary qualities

HUNGARY
For the artful harmony of an honest and skillful restoration set within
a composition of sensitive, high quality contemporary architecture, leading
to the rebirth of a 19th century neo-Classical style villa as a municipal
cultural centre.
Mercado de Colón, Valencia,
SPAIN
For the careful restoration of an important art nouveau market building
with an exemplary integration of a new parking facility, and for the consequent
revitalisation of its surroundings.

For the careful restoration of an industrial complex which respects the
testimony of the production process, made possible by the impressive perseverance
of its promoters.
Museum of the Residence of
Paul Koundouriotis, Isle of d'Hydra, GREECE
For the carefully researched restoration, executed with striking care
for detail, of an important historical mansion on the island of Hydra
and its conversion into a museum.
Sligo Courthouse, Sligo, IRELAND
For the successful restoration of a Victorian neo-Gothic building, whilst
responding to a complex brief and confidently integrating new elements
of the building fabric.
Villa Durante, Rome, ITALY
For the stunning restoration of a significant neo-Classical villa which
revealed hidden surface decorations and returned the building to its former
glory.
Former Ministers' Cabinet of the
Lithuanian Republic, Kaunas, LITHUANIA
For the well researched and complex restoration of a building of great
national importance, with emphasis on the authenticity of its interior
restoration.
Old Paper Mill Complex - presently
a shopping and cultural centre, Warsaw, POLAND
For the exemplary and dynamic rehabilitation of an industrial heritage
ruin, and its conversion into a centre for commerce and culture, now at
the heart of its community.
Old Salt-Fish Processing Centre -
presently Casa de Aldán, Cangas, SPAIN
For the sensitive and delicate rehabilitation of an old stone ruin, allowing
traces of the past to co-exist with the modern style and spaces of its
new function as a rural tourist accommodation.
The Monastery of Nuestra Señora
de Rueda, Sástago, SPAIN
For the significant and most respectful restoration of one of the finest
examples of cistercian monastic architecture, which brought this badly
damaged monument back to life.

SWEDEN
For the exemplary conservation of the ruined castle by means of the revival
of traditional mortar techniques and giving enhanced access through elegant
solutions.

SWEDEN
For the delicate restoration of a 16th century castle using ingenious
solutions to integrate technical installations into the old building.
Former Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette
Factory, Istanbul, TURKEY
For the rigorous and extensive restoration of an early industrial factory
complex to transform it into the central campus of a private university,
thus contributing to the regeneration of its historical surroundings.
Royal Albert Hall, London, UNITED
KINGDOM
For the remarkable achievement of restoring and enhancing an international
concert hall whilst still in use and for the ingenious provision of service
requirements, thereby releasing space for the public's enjoyment.
St Peter's Kirk, Orkney, UNITED
KINGDOM
For the restrained conservation, using traditional materials and where
possible local craftsmen, of a now rare 19th century church, reviving
it as a focal point for the community.

UNITED KINGDOM
For the hugely demanding restoration of an important and extraordinary
industrial monument, and its return to the use for which it was originally
intended.

For the extraordinary achievement of transforming the historic core of
a fine 18th century city and for gaining the co-operation and support

Salt-Pans, Piran, SLOVENIA
For the exemplary and sensitive revitalisation of a cultural landscape,
including the restitution of facilities for traditional salt production
technology, architectural restoration, and educational activities, all
in close harmony with the natural environment.

For the high quality, large-scale restoration of a distinguished 19th
century historic ensemble, thereby revitalising the whole city centre.
Heritage of the Riotinto Mining

mining district and convert it into a heritage tourist park.
Pedestrian zone along a central
cultural and tourist axis, Madrid, SPAIN
For a most important town-planning initiative which created and upgraded
a pedestrian axis, connecting some of the most characteristic points in
the inner city, along which local literary giants are highlighted.

For the imaginative and robust solution to the removal of traffic from
this symbolic square, thus enabling its use and enjoyment by the many

For the inventive restoration of a unique 'Parade' bed and its textiles
of feathers, only recently made possible because of technical advances,

For the highly professional scientific research, conservation and digitising
of a unique collection of Gothic architectural drawings, thus making them
widely accessible for study.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este's
Art Collection Devoted to St. George, Konopiste, CZECH REPUBLIC
For the outstanding and respectful restoration of a monothematic art collection
and the original form and organisation of its display, and for providing
a historical insight into a collector and his times.

Yria and Sangri Archaeological Sites,
Naxos, GREECE
For the systematic and sensitive excavation, restoration and presentation
of these important Ancient Greek sites and their integration with the
natural environment.

'Römerbergwerk Meurin',
Kretz, GERMANY
For the educational presentation of a Roman tuff stone mine, now located
within an active industrial mining site, which respectfully retains the
ancient traces for future research and illustrates 2,000 years of continuous
mining.

Pilot project for the Restoration
of Vernacular Dwellings, Rincón de Ademuz, SPAIN
For the creation of a well-researched methodology and guideline for restoring
humble vernacular houses in the region, which has proved to be an exemplary
didactic instrument at university level and has also had the tangible
effect of being a perfect model

L'Arno Racconta, Florence, ITALY
For the creative and novel ideas of the proposed intervention of using
lighting and projected images to enhance the urban quality of the city's
historical centre.
Sky Space around London's Inner
Parks, London, UNITED KINGDOM
For the exemplary methodology in isolating and analysing the open sky
views from within the parks needing protection and for the spatial development
strategy for maximum building heights radiating out across London.

The Encyclopaedia of Romanesque
Art in Castile and León, Aquilar de Campoo, Pálencia, SPAIN
For the extensive and accurate study of Romanesque architecture and art,
which provides a thorough record for educational and cultural purposes
of the historical heritage of this region.

ROMANIA
For 35 years of service as an architect to the cause of conservation,
both in times of immediate danger to the architectural heritage of Romania's
rural areas, and more recently, in helping develop effective support for
conservation by civil society.

For the enlightened choices he made, the tenacity he showed and the successes
he attained during the many years he devoted to safeguarding the city
of Antwerp's heritage and threatened monuments.

For the exemplary and professional development and management of a landscape
of great beauty and cultural value by a civic movement which continues
to enhance and protect it.

accessible Poland's rich archaeological and cultural heritage, and encouraging
especially children to act as monument protectors.
The Farmhouses of Hälsingland

For the restoration and care of a previously largely unnoticed, yet unique
architectural and agricultural heritage, and for raising local pride and
tourist interest in this rural area.

Nederland', Amersfoort, THE NETHERLANDS
For their practical sense yet groundbreaking method in maintaining historic
buildings by encouraging owners to understand the importance of day-to-day
care, and for the example they have been to heritage groups in other countries.
