Celebrating Europe's excellence and creativity

On 12 June 2008, the European Commission (DG EAC) and Europa Nostra awarded 6 Prizes, 18 Medals and 3 Europa Nostra Medals to the laureates of the 2008 edition of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards, at the European Heritage Awards Ceremony in the magnificent setting of Durham Cathedral in the United Kingdom. The awards were presented by S.A.R. la Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón, President of Europa Nostra, and Mr Vladimir Sucha, Director for Culture, Multilingualism and Communication at the European Commission's DG for Education and Culture. Dame Lize Forgan, Chair of the Heritage Lottery Find, addressed the audience with a speech 'One Hundred Thousand Brushstrokes'.

EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards

The European Commission and Europa Nostra today announced the laureates of the 2008 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards.
To recognise best practices in heritage conservation on a European level,
6 Top Prizes
and 21 Medals will be awarded
in 4 categories at the European Heritage Awards Ceremony on 12 June 2008 in Durham Cathedral, United Kingdom.

Agreement reached by Greek and Turkish Cypriots to join forces to save their Historic Town of Famagusta

Efforts to save Famagusta, once known as the richest city in the world, have brought together the Turkish and Greek Cypriot Representatives of this legendary town to work together on this unique and timely rescue initiative.

Europa Nostra Appeals to EXPO 2015
to Save Allianoi from the Floods

Europa Nostra has launched an urgent appeal to Mr Vicente González Loscertales, Secretary of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) and to Mr Cahit Kiraç, Governor of Izmir, calling on them to intervene for the safeguarding of the ancient city of Allianoi. Izmir is one of the candidates for EXPO 2015 on the theme “Health for All”. In this context, the Turkish Government’s plan to destroy one of the prime healing centres of the ancient world is rendered even more deplorable and unacceptable. EXPO 2015 could provide an opportunity and the necesssary ressources for saving Allianoi.

Say NO to a tramline through the heart of Florence!

Europa Nostra has come together with its founding member organisation Italia Nostra to express theirfirm opposition to the construction of a tram line through the very heart of the historic centre of Florence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. They call on the Florence and Italian authorities, as well as those of the EU institutions, the Council of Europe and UNESCO, to save the historic centre of Florence from this intrusive tram line.

Moscow Modern Movement Architecture under Threat

On 29 November 2007, Europa Nostra wrote to Mr Alexander Sokolov, Minister of Culture, and to Mr Yuri Luzhkov, Mayor of Moscow, to urge them to halt the rapid pace of destruction of the architecture of the Modern Movement. It thereby supports the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the Moscow Architectural Preservation Society (MAPS) in their campaigns waged for the preservation of this valuable heritage.

Appeal to safeguard St. Petersburg

On 28 November 2007, Europa Nostra launched an urgent appeal to President Vladimir Putin, calling on him to intervene for the safeguarding of the historic core of St. Petersburg. If no urgent action is undertaken, this outstanding historic urban landscape will be forever devastated by the construction of a 396 metre high skyscraper for the new headquarters of Gazprom, Russia ’s energy monopoly.

Europa Nostra participating in europalia.europa

Europa Nostra is participating in europalia.europe with a photo exhibit of a selection of past Laureates from across Europe of its now 30 year old Awards Scheme. The Opening of the Europa Nostra Awards Exhibition will be held in Tour & Taxis on Thursday 20 December at 18.30
The exhibition will run untill 15 January 2008 and will be free of charge.

Stockholm Declaration Adopted

On 7 June 2007, participants of the Europa Nostra Forum “Add Modernism! Modernist Architecture and Sites as Europe’s Cultural Heritage” adopted a declaration calling on “all European Institutions and Governments to apply the same rules, standards and funding structures to the protection and enhancement of architecture of the Modern Movement as are applied to all other architectural heritage”.

EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards

On 8 June 2007, the European Commission (DG EAC) and Europa Nostra awarded the 5 Top Prizes, 16 Medals and 13 Diplomas of the annual European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards.
The awards were presented by HRH the Prince Consort of Denmark, HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Patron of Europa Nostra Sweden, and Ján Figel', member of the European Commission, responsible for Education, Training, Culture and Youth.

New President for Europa Nostra

The Europa Nostra General Assembly, at its 2007 meeting on 6 June 2007 in Stockholm, elected HRH The Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón (Spain) as Europa Nostra's new President.

HRH The Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón will succeed HRH The Prince Consort of Denmark, who has been President of Europa Nostra for the past 17 years.

Appeal to Save Allianoi (Turkey)
"Stop the Flooding of Allianoi!"

Europa Nostra, together with the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) and the International Council On Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), appeals to the Turkish government to save the Roman Bath complex of Allianoi for present and future generations.
