Judge Caruana Curran has dedicated over forty years to upholding the cause of cultural heritage in Malta, and is considered by all to be the pioneer and pillar of the national conservation movement. In 1965 he founded Din l-Art Helwa – a voluntary non-governmental organisation – to assist the State in the conservation of environmental and cultural heritage. He succeeded in arousing the awareness of the public and of the government to the importance of Malta’s extraordinary heritage, lobbying against the misuse of land, the destruction of traditional architecture, the effects of the increase in tourism and development, for an improved legislation and for the listing of buildings. He toiled tirelessly to find volunteers, rally membership, raise funds and campaign on issues. Judge Caruana Curran organised conferences, lectures, educational initiatives, furthered international contacts, studied international legislation and wrote endless letters to the press. Under his leadership Din l-Art Helwa restored thirty historic sites, a Youth Section was formed, and Vigilo, the watchdog periodical regularly published. All his work was carried out voluntarily, whilst simultaneously pursuing a long and versatile career as one of Malta’s most distinguished lawyers and judges, then as President of the Medical Council of Malta and Chancellor of the University of Malta.

This monetary Prize will contribute to the conservation of the 19th century Historic Lighthouse of Delimara in the south of Malta.

Le juge Caruana Curran a consacré quarante ans de sa vie à défendre la cause du patrimoine culturel à Malte et est considéré par tous comme le pionnier et le pilier du mouvement national de protection – Din l-Art Helwa – organisation non gouvernementale bénévole qu’il a fondée en 1965 pour assister l’Etat dans la sauvegarde du patrimoine environnemental et culturel. Il a réussi à sensibiliser la conscience du public et du gouvernement à propos de l’importance du remarquable patrimoine maltais, faisant propagande contre l’usage peu approprié des terres, la destruction de l’architecture traditionnelle, les répercussions de la croissance touristique et économique et faisant pression en faveur d’une législation améliorée et du classement des édifices. Il s’est attaché inlassablement à recruter des bénévoles, à rassembler des membres, à recueillir des fonds et à mener des campagnes pour des résultats. Le juge Caruana Curran a organisé des conférences, des cours, lancé des initiatives éducatives, suscité des contacts internationaux, étudié la législation internationale et adressé une lettre après l’autre à la presse. Sous sa direction, Din l-Art Helwa a restauré trente sites historiques, a créé une Section des Jeunes et a publié régulièrement sa revue de surveillance Vigilo. Tout son travail s’est effectué bénévolement, alors qu’il poursuivait une longue carrière comme l’un des avocats et juges maltais les plus brillants, puis comme Président du Conseil Médical de Malte et Chancelier de l’Université de Malte.

Ce Prix doté en argent contribuera à la conservation du phare historique de Delimara datant du 19ème siècle et situé au sud de Malte.
