The DPHA gathers a multidisciplinary team of volunteers working for the safeguard and public valorisation of the historical churches of the Diocese of Beja and their collections. It operates in a 12,300 km² interior rural area of southern Portugal that is one of the poorest, least populated and most arid regions, yet one of the richest in terms of religious monuments. The DPHA began its work in 1984 in response to the dire situation involving the theft of works of art; the abandonment of over a hundred churches, including rural shrines; and the depreciation of works of art due to inappropriate interventions by unqualified restorers.

The DPHA launched a modern inventory of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the area, which includes a computerised database and on-line connection to the Ministry of Culture and police authorities; and created a technical consultancy service as support to the parishes. In cooperation with the local authorities, it provides training courses to priests and volunteers and has established local protection committees in the principal monuments which have now been opened to the public. The DPHA has restored or preserved over fifty historic churches and 1,000 works of art, established a network of diocese museums, organised hugely successful exhibitions of sacred art, such as “Entre o Céu e a Terra” and “As Formas do Espírito”, and developed an important publishing activity.

Le DPHA rassemble une équipe multidisciplinaire de bénévoles travaillant à la sauvegarde et à la valorisation auprès du public des églises historiques du diocèse de Beja et de leurs collections. Il opère dans une région rurale, s’étendant sur 12.300 km² au sud du Portugal, qui est l’une des plus pauvres, des moins peuplées etdes plus arides, mais cependant l’une des plus riches en ce qui concerne les monuments religieux. Le DPHA a entamé son travail en 1984 en réponse à la situation inquiétante suscitée par le vol d’œuvres d’art, l’abandon de plus d’une centaine d’églises, y compris des chapelles rurales, et la dévalorisation d’œuvres d’art due aux interventions inappropriées de restaurateurs non qualifiés.

Le DPHA a mis à jour un inventaire du patrimoine culturel matériel et immatériel de la région, incluant une base de données informatisée et une liaison directe avec le Ministère de la Culture et la Direction de la Police. Il a créé un service d’assistance technique aux paroisses. En collaboration avec les autorités locales, il assure des cours de formation aux prêtres et aux bénévoles et a installé des comités locaux de sauvegarde pour les principaux monuments déjà ouverts au public. Le DPHA a restauré ou sauvegardé plus de cinquante églises historiques et un millier d’œuvres d’art, tissé un réseau de musées diocésains, organisé des expositions d’art sacré couronnées de succès, comme ‘Entre o Céu e a Terra’ (‘Entre Ciel et Terre’) et ‘As Formas do Espirito’ (‘Les Formes de l’Esprit’) et développé une importante activité d’édition.
