The Bulgarian National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) was established as a non-profit organisation in 1996 and currently gathers some 110 members, forming a multidisciplinary community of specialists in the field of cultural heritage.

Acting in close cooperation with the authorities, professional and academic institutions and civil society, ICOMOS Bulgaria has been the driving force behind a strong movement which has placed cultural heritage on the political agenda and has contributed to defining the country’s heritage policies. The organisation plays a dynamic role in the conservation of Bulgaria ’s most significant monuments and sites - such as the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo or the Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari - which it has strived to restore and render accessible to the public through the elaboration and realisation of numerous projects and necessary fund-raising. ICOMOS Bulgaria - also as the national coordinator of the European Heritage Days - has encouraged the development of civil society in Bulgaria and increased social awareness on heritage and the challenges it faces. A permanent training programme for specialists, including scholarships for young professionals, has been established.

ICOMOS Bulgaria has participated in and organised numerous international meetings and is a particularly active National Committee of ICOMOS, thereby raising the profile of Bulgarian heritage abroad. Through the creation of mechanisms for regional cooperation, such as cultural tourism itineraries in South-East Europe , the protection and sustainable use of cultural heritage and inter-cultural dialogue has been promoted throughout the Balkan region.

Pour le développement et la mise en œuvre d’une politique et d’une action efficaces dans un contexte de transition politique difficile, l’exemple promulgué aux niveaux régional et international, et l’esprit louable de coopération.

Le Comité National Bulgare du Conseil International des Monuments et Sites (ICOMOS) s’est constitué en 1996 comme organisation non-gouvernementale et rassemble actuellement quelques 110 membres, formant une communauté multidisciplinaire de spécialistes du patrimoine culturel.

Agissant en étroite coopération avec les autorités, les institutions professionnelles et académiques et la société civile, ICOMOS Bulgarie a été le moteur d’un puissant mouvement qui a placé le patrimoine culturel à l’ordre du jour politique et a contribué à définir en ce domaine les lignes d’action nationale. L’organisation joue un rôle dynamique dans la préservation des monuments et des sites les plus importants de Bulgarie -comme les Eglises rupestres d’Ivanovo (photo droite) et le Tombeau thrace de Svechtari (photo gauche), qu’elle s’est efforcée de restaurer et de rendre accessible au public en élaborant et en réalisant de nombreux projets ainsi qu’en récoltant les fonds nécessaires. ICOMOS Bulgarie - également en tant que coordinateur national des Journées du Patrimoine - a encouragé le développement de la société civile bulgare et a fait progresser la prise de conscience sociale vis-à-vis du patrimoine et des défis à relever. Un programme permanent de formation pour spécialistes, incluant des bourses pour de jeunes professionnels, a été établi.

ICOMOS Bulgarie a participé à et organisé de nombreuses rencontres internationales. Il est un comité national d’ICOMOS particulièrement actif, rendant le patrimoine bulgare plus connu à l’étranger. A travers la création de mécanismes de coopération régionale, tels que les itinéraires de tourisme culturel en Europe sud-orientale, la protection et l’utilisation appropriée du patrimoine ainsi que le dialogue interculturel ont été mis en avant dans les Balkans.
