This project involves the rehabilitation of a fragment of the neglected historic urban environment composed of remarkable 18th century warehouses lining the edge of Valletta’s Grand Harbour. As a principal point of introduction to the islands, a dynamic image was required for the entire waterfront, inviting both locals and visitors to stroll around and experience the visual richness of the area. To this end, a master-plan was devised to re-interpret the interface between the public spaces and the water.

The regeneration aimed at the re-use of the historical fabric through its conservative restoration combined with an integrated design approach that includes building additions, alterations, extensions, as well as new building projects. The restoration of the Grade 1 listed Pinto Stores, Forni Stores and historical quay wall have all been completed. The design strategy re-establishes the approximate curvature of the shoreline - through the reconstruction of four missing façades within the central panel of the Pinto Stores - bringing the magnificent façades close to the sea to allow for their reflection in the water.

This large-scale conservation project has stimulated the regeneration of a key area of the city, and has successfully blended great sensitivity for aesthetic value and historical significance with the functional considerations of a busy cruise line terminal and a promenade with multifarious commercial, cultural and leisure activities.

Le projet impliquait la réhabilitation d’une partie de l’environnement urbain historique négligé, comprenant un ensemble d’entrepôts remarquables du 18e siècle en bordure du grand port de La Valette. Comme porte principale vers les îles, une image dynamique s’imposait pour le front de mer dans son ensemble, invitant les visiteurs ainsi que les habitants à flâner et à ressentir la richesse visuelle du quartier. Dans ce but, un plan directeur fut conçu pour réinterpréter l’interface entre l’espace public et la mer.

Le projet visait à réutiliser le tissu historique par sa restauration ‘conservatrice’ associée à une approche conceptuelle intégrée incluant des ajouts de bâtiments, des transformations, des agrandissements, ainsi que des nouvelles constructions. La restauration d’édifices classés tels que les entrepôts Pinto et Forni et le mur du quai historique, a été entièrement achevée. La stratégie conceptuelle rétablissait la courbure approximative du rivage par la reconstruction des quatre façades disparues du panneau central des entrepôts Pinto qui avaient étaient détruites durant les bombardements de la deuxième Guerre Mondiale, les rapprochant de la mer et leur permettant de se refléter dans l’eau.

Ce projet de sauvegarde à grande échelle a stimulé la régénération d’une zone-clef de la ville et réussi à marier une grande sensibilité pour la valeur esthétique et la signification historique aux considérations fonctionnelles d’un port de croisière et d’une promenade avec diverses activités commerciales, culturelles et de loisirs.
