The construction of the Alqueva dam and the Guadiana hydrographical basin rendered the submersion of Luz and the relocation of its inhabitants to a brand new village unavoidable. The 15th century church and 19th century cemetery - strong elements of identity - were relocated from the old village into the new site two km away. A new museum was designed to conserve the village’s history and identity and to support the inhabitants’ need to redefine and reintegrate a new identity through memory.

Strategically situated along the east-west axis of the village, the museum constitutes the founding and structural element of the new village. It redesigns its topographical relationship with the landscape, reflecting the conditions of the building as a mark of identity where the route, walls and light reveal the culture of the territory. The interior sequence of spaces, initially designed without knowledge of their specific use and content, responds to the immateriality of the building’s functional programme with a strong emphasis on the fabric - walls of concrete and schist extracted from a local quarry. The landscape has been reconstructed through the use of local materials and traditions. The Luz (light) room as focal point of the museum, with light flues the only externally visible signs of the building, constitutes a space of light or a blank page ready to receive the record of the life of the territory as history unfolds.

Pour le transfert ingénieux de l’église et du cimetière d’un village et pour la conception idoine d’un nouveau musée en vue de préserver et développer l’identité du village et d’établir un lien entre le passé et l’avenir.

La construction du barrage d’Alqueva et du bassin hydrographique du Guadiana rendait inévitable la submersion de Luz et le déménagement de ses habitants dans un village tout neuf. L’église du 15e siècle et le cimetière du 19e siècle, en tant qu’éléments forts d’identité, ont été transférés de l’ancien village au nouveau site localisé à deux kilomètres. Un nouveau musée a été conçu pour préserver l’histoire et l’identité du village et aider les habitants à redéfinir et à intégrer une nouvelle identité par le biais des souvenirs.

Situé stratégiquement sur l’axe est-ouest du village, le musée constitue l’assise et l’élément fondateur et structurant du nouveau village. Il crée une nouvelle relation topographique avec le paysage, en reflétant les conditions de l’édifice comme marque d’identité où route, murs et lumière révèlent la culture du territoire. A l’intérieur, la succession des espaces, initialement conçus sans connaître leur utilisation spécifique et leur contenu, répond à l’immatérialité du programme fonctionnel de construction avec un fort accent sur la matière - murs de béton et de schiste extrait d’une carrière locale.  Le paysage fut reconstitué en utilisant des traditions et des matériaux locaux. La salle de Luz (lumière) comme point de convergence du musée, avec des cheminées de lumière comme seuls signes visibles du musée à l’extérieur, constitue un espace de lumière ou une page blanche prête à recevoir le récit de la vie d’un territoire en pleine transformation.
