As former President of the Hessian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, chairman of the influential advisory group to the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, and chairman of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monuments Protection), Professor Kiesow is one of the most effective advocates for cultural heritage in Germany. A particular interest has been the European city as a defining characteristic of the identity of its citizens and its protection as an ensemble. Professor Kiesow made it his personal concern to draw attention to the desolate state of East German cities, and it is largely due to his efforts that the cities of Quedlinburg, Wismar and Stralsund were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Another successful initiative has been the European Route of Brick Gothic, a network of thirty cities which has brought tourism development and substantial benefits to the Baltic region.

As founding member of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz in 1985 and chairman since 1994, Professor Kiesow was involved in the establishment of Germany ’s largest citizen movement for monument protection which, under his guidance, has rescued over 3.000 endangered buildings. His personal convictions that the safeguarding the historic environment is the responsibility of each individual and of the need for raising public awareness is strongly reflected in the Foundation’s statutes. The success of this is demonstrated by the participation of over four million citizens in the annual European Heritage Days, whose nationwide coordination has been the responsibility of the Stiftung since 1993.

En tant qu’ancien président du Bureau d’Etat pour la Préservation des Monuments du Hesse, président du groupe de conseil influent au Ministère fédéral des Transports, de la construction et des Affaires urbaines et, et président du Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (la fondation allemande pour la protection des monuments), le professeur Kiesow est l’un des plus efficaces défenseurs du patrimoine culturel en Allemagne. Il a porté un intérêt particulier à la ville européenne comme étant une caractéristique distinctive de l’identité de ses citoyens et à sa protection dans son ensemble. Le professeur Kiesow fit, d’attirer l’attention sur l’état désolant des villes de l’Allemagne de l’est, une préoccupation personnelle. En effet, c’est en grande partie grâce à ses efforts que les villes de Quedlinburg, Wismar et Stralsund ont été inscrites sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. La Route Européenne de la Brique Gothique,fut une autre de ses brillantes initiatives : il s’agit d’un réseau de trente villes qui a apporté un développement touristique et des avantages conséquents à la région baltique.
