Situated in the heart of the Abruzzi highlands, Santo Stefano di Sessanio offers a typical medieval urban landscape with its crenellated tower, courtyards, patios, alleys, covered passages, homes with arches, lodges, portals, fireplaces and stone cornices. Devastating poverty, rural exodus and ultimately complete abandonment had saved this village from inappropriate developments and ensured the maintenance of the exceptional integrity and authenticity of its architectural, environmental and historical features. The initiative of a private investor for salvaging this historical burgh through its revitalisation as an extended hotel complex has set an unprecedented approach for triggering the revival of vernacular architecture by promoting tourism with great respect for authenticity and the autochthonous identity.

The project ensured the re-integration of historical objects discovered in the region; the maintenance of the original use of the spaces; furnishing of the age-old interiors in the Arte Povera tradition of the region; the introduction of modern comfort amenities in an imperceptible manner; and the re-introduction of local crafts and traditions – from religious rituals to culinary traditions to folk music to handicraft - which had barely been kept alive in the oral tradition and the memories the region's elderly citizens, whilst taking every precaution to avoid the common trap of falsified folk mannerism. The selected approach has preserved the patina of age and evidence of lives lived in poverty, such as the smoke-blackened plasters, as an integral part of the heritage.

Pour une ingénieuse approche à la fois humaine et écologique, afin de préserver et redynamiser un village médiéval fortifié déserté, qui crée un précédent pour faire revivre le patrimoine architectural rural en Europe.

Situé au coeur des montagnes des Abruzzes, Santo Stefano di Sessanio offre un paysage urbain médiéval typique avec des tours crénelées, des cours intérieures, des patios, des ruelles, des passages couverts, des maisons à arches, des pavillons, des portails, des cheminées et des corniches de pierre. La pauvreté dévastatrice, l’exode rural et enfin l’abandon total, ont sauvé ce village de changements inappropriés et assuré la maintenance de l’exceptionnelle intégrité et authenticité de ses caractéristiques architecturales, environnementales et historiques. L’initiative d’un investisseur privé pour sauver ce bourg historique grâce à sa redynamisation en complexe hôtelier de grande ampleur a mené à une approche sans précédent pour déclencher la renaissance de l’architecture vernaculaire en encourageant le tourisme, avec un grand respect pour l’authenticité et l’identité locale.

Le projet a permis la réintégration d’objets historiques découverts dans la région, le maintien de l’utilisation d’origine des espaces, l’ameublement des intérieurs séculaires dans la tradition régionale de l’Arte Povera, l’introduction d’équipements du confort moderne de manière imperceptible, et la réintroduction des métiers et traditions du terroir - rituels religieux, traditions culinaires, musique folklorique et artisanat – qui ont à peine été conservés dans la tradition orale et dans la mémoire des aînés de la région, tout en évitant le piège fréquent de caricaturer le folklore. L’approche choisie a préservé la patine de l’âge et les témoignages de vies vécues en pauvreté tels que les murs noircis par la fumée, comme partie intégrante du patrimoine.
