Tamás FEJÉRDY, representing Hungary, 2006-2009
Dr Tamás Fejérdy qualified as an architect at the Budapest Technical University in 1970, and obtained his PhD at the same university with a thesis entitled “Protection of Historic Sites and Ensembles in Hungary ”. He worked as an architect and engineer in Pest County and in Budapest from 1970 to1976. In 1976 he started a career at the Hungarian National Inspectorate of National Monuments, where he held various positions before finally serving as Director from 2001-2003.
He has been extremely active in a number of professional bodies, serving as President of ICOMOS Hungary (1997-2003), President of ICOMOS-CIVVIH “International Committee on Historic Towns and Villages” (1992-2002). He has participated in the drafting of a number of standard setting documents, such as the International Charter of Rehabilitation of Historic Towns and the Nara Document on Authenticity.
He has been responsible for evaluation missions of a number of nominations to the World Heritage List in Europe and beyond. From 2002-2003 he was Chairman of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
Since 1992 he has taught and lectured on heritage protection at the Budapest Technical and other universities throughout Hungary , and has widely published on the subject. He is currently Vice-President of the National Office for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (since 2003) and Vice-President of ICOMOS International responsible for Europe (since October 2005). Dr Fejérdy speaks fluent English and French.
