STOP THE SANT'AMBROGIO CAR PARK IN MILAN

may 18

Most recently, Europa Nostra wrote the President of the Municipal Council of Milan to congratulate them on the decision taken by this Municipal Council to suspend the works on the construction of an underground car park under the Piazza Sant’Ambrogio. Europa Nostra once again appealed to the local authorities of Milan to save the Piazza Sant’Ambrogio with its outstanding historic and archaeological values.

Previously, in March 2012, Europa Nostra already appealed to the Mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia, to stop the underground car park in the historical square of Piazza Sant'Ambrogio. Recent discoveries of the sacred cemetery 'Coemeterium ad Martyres' following the car park related diggings, proves the extraordinary archaelogical value of the entire area surrounding Sant'Ambrogio. In his letter, Executive President Denis de Kergorlay renewed the call to stop the works that was initially launched by Europa Nostra's President Plácido Domingo in the main Italian daily Corriere della Sera last December, following a campaign started by Italia Nostra, Europa Nostra’s founding member organisation.

In his heartfelt personal appeal Domingo highlighted that transforming this piazza into a roof of a massive underground garage would be hardly compatible with the historical and artistic heritage of a place that the culture of the world admires and wants to see preserved in its integrity.
