Following the visit to Bucharest on 19-20 November by Europa Nostra’s Executive President, Denis de Kergorlay, and its Secretary General, Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic, Europa Nostra continues to monitor developments in Romania with regard to the ever growing civil society movement opposing the RMGC open-cast gold mine project and pleading for the safeguard of the cultural heritage and landscape of Rosia Montana.

Stefan Bâlici, Vice-President of the Romanian NGO Architecture-Restoration-Archaeology (ARA), was invited to be one of the key speakers at the European heritage policy conference ‘Cultural Heritage for Europe, Europe for Cultural Heritage’ on 5 December in Brussels. He also took part in the Council meeting of Europa Nostra for the presentation of the reports on ‘The 7 Most Endangered’ sites on 6 December in the Belgium capital.

Last week, Europa Nostra welcomed the rejection by Romania’s House of Representatives of the proposed amendments to the framework law on mining operations, the aim of which was to pave the way for the approval of the RMGC gold mine project in Rosia Montana. The next day, on 11 December, Europa Nostra’s Secretary General gave an extensive live interview to the Swiss Radio as part of the one-hour programme exclusively dedicated to Rosia Montana.
