LOCAL AWARDS CEREMONIES HOSTED ACROSS EUROPE

Local Awards Ceremonies hosted in Edinburgh (Scottish winners), Dublin (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) Brescia (Chiesa dei Santi Faustino e Giovita), Istanbul (Culture Ants), Rome (MACRO Future and Alternative Economy City) (The Noah’s Ark Project), and Nicosia (Bedestan)

 

  • A joint Local Awards Ceremony took place in Edinburgh on Wednesday 17 June 2009 for the four Scottish winners: Stanley Mills, the Logie Schoolhouse, the Pier Arts Centre, and Professor David Walker, OBE. The evening was kindly hosted by Historic Scotland which had sponsored the Stanley Mills project, and supported each of the other three award winners. Honorary Live Members Dr Lester Borley CBE and Prof. Sir James Dunbar-Nasmith CBE, presented the awards. Also present at the ceremony in addition to the representatives of the winners, were representatives of the Scottish Government and the European Commission in Edinburgh, as well as other heritage organisations, and Europa Nostra members.

 

  • The Local Award Ceremony for Grotenfelt Family Burial Chapel, was held in Joroinen on 16 September 2009.  A group of 25 persons attended the ceremony, of which six were members of Europa Nostra. There were also four members of the press representing local and provincial newspapers. After the greetings of Mr. Karl Grotenfelt, County Governor Pirjo Ala-Kapee and architect Thomas Willoch, member of the Europa Nostra Council and former vice-president of the awards jury unveiled the Europa Nostra Plaque. During his speech, Mr. Willoch praised the remarkable work to save this unique piece of our common heritage to the future generations. He also praised the work of Europa Nostra and its most visible activity, the Awards Program.

 

  • The Local Awards Ceremony for Kesälahti Church Bell Tower was held in Kesälahti, on 17 September 2009. More than 100 persons attended the Ceremony, of which four were members of Europa Nostra. There were several members of the press representing local and provincial newspapers. Deputy Vicar Ms. Mikkonen chaired the long program, outdoors in front of the Bell Tower. Karelian Military Band, three brass instrumentalists, performed in between traditional music. After the opening words by the Chairman of the parish board, Mr. Tuhkanen. Thomas Willoch, member of the Europa Nostra Council, gave a speech and unveiled the Europa Nostra Plaque. He stated: “The Bell Tower of Kesälahti is a rare, little architectural diamond – modest in size, inspiring in details, unique in its totality. The carpenters have been forced to form every shingle to fit in the whole pattern – and its neighbour shingle – by the most careful precision work…” The Ceremony concluded with refreshments and exhibition presenting the conservation work in Kesälahti parish hall.

 

  • The Local Award Ceremony for the Irish Laureate in Category 2 - Research, the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, was held on 25 September 2009 at the Custom House, Dublin, Headquarters of the Irish Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The event was attended by approximately 60 people, including Council Member, Consuelo O’Connor, who presented the award with the Minister for the Environment, Mr. John Gormley T.D., who hosted the reception. He stated: “The Europa Nostra award scheme, sponsored and funded by the European Union, is a timely reminder that the EU is not just about politics and economics but plays an important role in many things that enhance the quality of life of its citizens – the conservation of our heritage being one of them.”

 

  • The Local Awards Ceremony for the Chiesa dei Santi Faustino e Giovita in Fasano di Gardone Riviera, Grand Prize Laureate in Category 1 Conservation, was held on 16 October 2009. The restoration of the church after its devastation in the 2004 earthquake, carefully hid the structural reinforcements while impeccably returning the space and the detailing to its former glory. The award was presented at the Palazzo Chizzola in Brescia by Secretary-General Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, to the project managers, architect Rossana Bettinelli and engineer Antonio Valva. Also present, were the President of Italia Nostra Dr. Alessandra Mottola Molfino, and the EN Vice-President Dr. Federico Guasti.


  • Istanbul’s Agia Irini was the WHListed and breathtaking setting for the 25 October 2009 Local Awards Ceremony for the Category 4 Awareness-Raising Project entitled CULTURE ANTS – Cultural Awareness Foundation’ (photo). Europa Nostra’s Secretary General Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović presented the award before an audience of five hundred, including some school children who had taken part in the Project and representatives of the Cultural Awareness Foundation. This high level ceremony was attended by the Minister of State and EU Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis, stressing the importance Turkey places on awareness-raising regarding multi-cultural heritage.


  • MACRO Future and Alternative Economy City, the transformed former Testaccio Slaughterhouse in Rome, hosted its Local Awards Ceremony on 5 November 2009, for its Category 1 Award in Conservation. The award was presented to the Italian Laureate by Europa Nostra Board member Martin Scicluna, and by the Vice-President of Italia Nostra, Nicola Caracciolo. The Deputy Mayor of Rome Mauro Cutrufo, and the Director of the Macro Museum were present.


  • The Local Awards Ceremony for the Italian Grand Prize Laureate for the Category 2 Research project The Noah’s Ark project: Global Climate Change Impact on Built Heritage and Cultural Landscapes, took place in Rome on 6 November 2009. The ceremony was held at the Salone del Consiglio Nazionale, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, and was attended by, among others, EN Board member Martin Scicluna, and by Antonello Alici, Secretary General of Italia Nostra. Also present were the Coordinator of the Noah’s Ark Project, the Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage, the Director of the Department of Health and Environment, and the National Representative for the European Environment Commission.


  • The Local Awards Ceremony for the Cyprian Laureate, the Bedestan (St. Nicholas Church) in Nicosia on 9 November 2009. The award was presented for the Category 2 Research project for the Study, Assessment and Design for the Structural and Architectural Restoration of the Bedestan. The awards ceremony was held in conjunction with the inauguration ceremony for the completion of the project and was attended by Gianni Perbellini, Chairman for Category 2.
