HISTORIC BAKU

2010-02-10

The several thousands years old city on the banks of the Caspean Sea of Baku bears witness to its long history and of the various populations, tribes, religions and ambitions which have influenced it. Islamic monuments exist next to Orthodox churches and Catholic convents, and you will still find ancient Zoroastrian temples where fire is worshiped. The growth of Baku was particularly rapid after the middle of 19th century when enornous quantities of oil were found in the adjoining Caspian Sea. Its prosperity, evident in the city's marvelous buildings, was due to substantial past Russian, Armenian, Jewish, Turkish, and also German, American and Scandinavian investments. The traces of this rich heritage are visible in historic Baku, especially in its old walled center, Icheri Sheher. In spite the fact that the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, its heritage is under serious threat because of quick development programmes and the enormous financial power concentrated in private hands.
