YEREVAN IN ARMENIA

Once the enormous country spread from the Caspean to the Mediterranian sea, and now among the smallest European countries, Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity. Therefore the traces of this ancient civilization can be found everywhere in the neighbouring countries, and naturally all over the actual Armenia. The importance and the beauty of its monuments are well known, but it is not enough known that they are seriously endangered: first of all in Armenia itself, because of great economic problems due to great isolation and general poverty of the state, but also because small number of new, very rich people have no mercy to the heritage but only proper interests in modern construction investments. The great problems for Armenian monuments abroad exist because of the lack of cooperation and understanding with surrounding nations. That is why this is surely among the greatest European challenges in heritage protection. But, Yerevan is still conserving its old fashion charme with its huge parks full of flowers and shadows, its small old houses and narrow calm streets...
