HIGH VOLTAGE POWER LINES IN HARDANGER

2010-02-25

Statsnett is currently planning and doing feasebility studies for the construction of several 420 kV powerlines, with a total length of 400 km, in the fjords of Western Norway. The Ministry of Oil and Energy will shortly handle an appeal relating to the concession given to Statsnett for the construction of a 90 km. high voltage power line from Sima to Samnanger.

The beautiful nature and the exceptional cultural landscape of the fjords of Western Norway are outstanding in a European and Internatioal context. Consequently, Europa Nostra request the Ministry of Oil and Energy to delay the handling of the appeal for construction of the high voltage power line along the Hardanger Fjord.

UNESCO has recently included two fjords on the West Coast to the World Heritage List and National Geographic Society elected the fjords of Norway to the worlds most prominent tourist destination. Consequently, the Ministry of Oil and Energy has to take the resposibility for not reducing the outstanding beaty of this area by the construction of large conventional masts.

Europa Nostra Norway recommends the Ministry of Oil and Energy a number of steps including reassessing the assumptions which were the basis for the Statsnett concession, a thorough evaluation of the demand of electric power in the region, establishing the costs for alternative technical solutions and seeking advice from professional bodies

Europa Nostra held its annual meeting in Bergen in 2005 with the presence of EU Commissioner for Culture Jan Figel. Subsequent to the meeting, a tour of the fjords of Western Norway took place. The Board and the Council of the organisation consequently have a very good understanding of the consequences of the construction of major power lines and the necessary large masts along the Hardangerfjord, and possibly at a later date, along other fjords of exceptional beauty on the West Coast of Norway.
