NUMANCIA, TWO THOUSANDS YEARS AFTER

2010-05-19

Recently, some decisions have been published in Spain to stop an industrial estate next to Numancia.

After our appearance at the European Parliament and the help of institutions such as Europa Nostra, the German Archaeological Institute, the Spanish Royal Academies and universities as Hamburg, Exeter, Sorbonne and countless institutions from all over the world, Numancia can, for the moment, remain preserverd for our common European history.

The efforts of my family, after six years of struggle, have not yet finished as the Junta de Castilla y Leon, Soria City Council have appealed to the Supreme Court in Spain the reasons for our defense, but we are asking for help to all of Europe to keep this piece of our history and cultural landscape surrounding the Siege of Scipio and the story of the major Spanish poets that were set in this unique environment.

The threat is still on, the Environment City wants to build a thousand houses and glass buildings of 40 meters in front of Numancia. The European Parliament already denounced the Spanish Minister of Culture for this authentic nonsense, refering to the industrial estate as well as the Environment City.

All efforts that can be made to continue denouncing this nonsense will be very welcome considering that institutional speculation and vested interests have come together to a new siege of Numancia with cement, corrugated iron and neon two thousand years after that Scipio and Rome narrated Numancia for its courage in defense of freedom.
