Europa Nostra’s 60th Anniversary Summit in Venice, 27-30 September 2023

The celebration of Europa Nostra’s 60th Anniversary in 2023 represents the perfect occasion to capitalise on the unique contribution of our organisation to the preservation of cultural heritage in Europe and beyond, and to demonstrate our firm commitment to respond creatively and forcefully to many challenges that our society and environment are facing today. The choice of Venice as the host city of our 60th Anniversary European Cultural Heritage Summit represents in itself a symbol of our dedication to a value-based and culture-driven Europe.

We want to celebrate with all of you in our beloved, but endangered World Heritage City of Venice. Our President Cecilia Bartoli will be with us in person and many other high-profile guests and supporters, including the highest representatives of EU Institutions, have been invited to join us.

Let us give you some flavour of the programme which we are currently busy preparing with the support of many partners.

Wednesday 27 September

The Heritage Excellence Day, with presentations by the 2023 winners of the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards, will take place on 27 September at the headquarters of the Giorgio Cini Foundation in the iconic setting of Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore.

Thursday 28 September

The European Heritage Hub Forum will be held on the morning of 28 September at The Home of the Human Safety Net at the Procuratie Vecchie in St Mark’s Square, a landmark of Venice. Built in the early 1500s, the iconic building underwent a five-year renovation led by Sir David Chipperfield, recently awarded The Pritzker Architecture Prize. The project, completed in 2022, was commissioned by Generali, a company that began its life in the Procuratie Vecchie. In addition to housing offices and co-working spaces for Generali and The Human Safety Net – the company’s global social initiative – the building now hosts exhibitions and events, opening areas to the public for the first time in its history.

The European Heritage Awards Ceremony will take place on the evening of 28 September in the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido, in a place where the world’s leading actors and actresses of the 20th and 21st centuries have received a Golden Lion for their artistic performances.

Friday 29 September

29 September is reserved for the European Heritage Policy Agora as well as Europa Nostra’s 60th Anniversary General Assembly, which will be held at the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista with the stunning scalone by Renaissance architect Mauro Codussi. On that same night, we will be hosted by one of our generous and devoted members in a fabulous Palazzo on the Grand Canal for a candle light evening to sing “Happy Birthday to you, Europa Nostra”.

We will have free time to enjoy the city and its rich cultural programmes and offers, but also to participate in some exclusive initiatives that will allow you to discover unknown campi and calli.

The Summit is organised in the frame of our network project European Heritage Agora co-funded by the European Union.

Stay tuned for more detailed information and be ready to pack up and join us in Venice, according to many the most beautiful city in the world!
