Ceremony for “Sector 2: Nicosia – The Green Line Project” held at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, Cyprus
On 6 June, the 2026 European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award bronze plaque granted to the exhibition Sector 2: Nicosia – The Green Line Project, developed by the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, was unveiled by Charalampos Prountzos, Mayor of Nicosia, and Androulla Vassiliou, Vice-President of Europa Nostra and Chair of the Europa Nostra Heritage Hub in Nicosia. Held at the Museum, the ceremony brought together around 100 participants from the cultural heritage sector, alongside representatives of local institutions and the wider community.

The ceremony opened with remarks by the Mayor of Nicosia, who praised the exhibition for its ability to interpret collective memory and “transform it into a living experience of understanding.” His address was followed by remarks from Fotini Papadopoulou, Trustee of the A. G. Leventis Foundation.
Agni Petridou, Board Member of Europa Nostra and Member of the Awards Jury, highlighted the qualities that led the Jury to select the exhibition among the 30 winners of the Awards 2026: “This did not happen by chance. What was positively assessed was the project’s ability to engage the public; not simply to leave visitors as spectators, but to bring them into the experience, creating participation, dialogue and reflection around memory and urban space.”

Tzeni Lymperopoulou Savvidou, Director of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, presented the development of the project, reflecting on the collaborative process that made it possible. She emphasised the importance of partnerships, mutual trust and the collective commitment of all contributors, which proved essential to the successful realisation of the exhibition and its international recognition.
The ceremony also featured a musical performance by Nicoletta Demetriou, whose project The Cypriot Fiddler was likewise recognised with a European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award in 2026.

The event concluded with a guided tour of Sector 2: Nicosia – The Green Line Project, offering participants the opportunity to experience first-hand the exhibition’s innovative approach to interpreting the divided urban landscape of Nicosia and fostering dialogue around memory, identity and shared heritage.
