Online debate “Food and Cultural Heritage: an EU Policy Perspective”
Join us for the online debate “Food and Cultural Heritage: an EU Policy Perspective” on 17 November (11:00-13:00 CET) co-hosted by Europa Nostra and Slow Food and as part of the Terra Madre festival!
On this occasion, the EU Policy Brief on Food & Cultural Heritage recently published by Europa Nostra and Slow Food in the frame of the “Food is Culture” project, will be presented and discussed by representatives from the European Commission (DG AGRI and DG EAC), from the European Parliament (CULT and AGRI Committees), and from civil society. Through this paper, the project partners demonstrate the relevance of food heritage, as it constitutes a strong social, economic, and environmental asset for Europe’s recovery, for the fight against climate change and the loss of biodiversity, for sustainable local development, and for social cohesion and inclusion. The brief also includes concrete recommendations to EU policymakers to better protect food heritage, namely by seeking greater coherence between cultural, food and agricultural policies.
The panel will be composed as follows:
– Branka Tome, Deputy Head of Unit, DG for Agriculture and Rural Development, European Commission
– Pedro Velázquez Hernández, Deputy Head of Unit, DG Education and Culture, European Commission
– Massimiliano Smeriglio, MEP, Member of the EP CULT and AGRI Committees
– Jimmy Jamar, Head of Europa Nostra Brussels Office
– Marta Messa, Director of Slow Food Office in Brussels
The debate will include a presentation of the art exhibition “What you didn’t know existed. Endangered food from around the world“, which is now available online after having been presented in several cities across Europe. This multimedia artwork aims at raising the public awareness of the richness of our food heritage, which embodies our shared European values, but is also often at risk of disappearing.
The live stream will be made available to the public. Registered participants will be able to ask their questions to the speakers via the online forum. You can register for the event here!
