European Commission summer magazine puts a spotlight on cultural heritage

The July/August issue of “Commission en direct” focuses on Europe’s cultural heritage, highlighting the winners of the 2014 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards and the new European Heritage Label initiative. In this edition, Androulla Vassiliou, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Regional Policy, discuss what the EU is doing to support and promote Europe’s rich cultural heritage and why.

The summer dossier of “Commission en direct” takes us on a fantastic journey across Europe’s cultural heritage, presenting the best examples of conservation, research, dedicated service, and education, training and awareness-raising recognised this year by the European Commission and Europa Nostra. The six-page article (pages 40-45) also includes background information about the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards and mentions the 2014 European Heritage Awards Ceremony in Vienna.

This dossier also features an article about the European Heritage Label, a new initiative promoted by the EU which aims to highlight heritage sites that celebrate and symbolise European history, ideals, and integration (pages 38-39).

In a joint interview, Commissioners Androulla Vassiliou and Johannes Hahn talk about some of the key changes under the new Multiannual Financial Framework and the relevant programmes that will affect projects in the cultural heritage sector. They advocate that cultural heritage can make a significant contribution to local and regional economies in terms of growth and new jobs, and state that the new funding requirements seek to promote this (pages 34-35).

Recently, the two Commissioners also gave exclusives interviews to Europa Nostra’s magazine Heritage in Motion. In our 2014 Austrian Special, Androulla Vassiliou shares her convictions and commitments to culture in Europe, and Johannes Hahn conveys his vision on sustainable regional development with cultural heritage as its key resource.
