European experts call for urgent stabilisation and rehabilitation of Greek Orthodox Church of St. Georgios in Altınözü, Türkiye

In the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye in 2023, the publication of the Technical Report on the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Georgios in Altınözü, Hatay province, offers more than an assessment of damage. The report prepared by a European team of experts provides a clear conclusion: the Church of St. Georgios can and should be stabilised, studied and restored.

Following a nomination by Europa Nostra Türkiye and the Sarılar Neighbourhood Association in 2023, the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Georgios (also known as Kaddis Mar Circos) was included among the 7 Most Endangered heritage sites in Europe in 2024 under Europa Nostra’s 7 Most Endangered Programme, run with the support of  the European Investment Bank Institute.

The Greek Orthodox Church of St. Georgios carries historical significance. The report identifies it as an important witness to centuries of Christian presence in the region and a symbol of Hatay’s multi-religious history. Its architectural form, which shares notable similarities with the nearby Meryem Ana Rum Church in Tokaçlı, may preserve evidence of medieval and later construction phases that remain insufficiently documented.

Three years ago, on 6 February 2023, a series of catastrophic earthquakes  caused widespread devastation and irreparable damage in southern Türkiye and northern Syria in 2023. The Hatay province alone amassed almost 25,000 casualties, with about 90,000 buildings destroyed. Furthermore, the destruction of cultural heritage is another added toll of this natural disaster, severely impacting intangible traditions and placing financial burdens on communities. This is exemplified by the destruction of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Georgios, which had functioned as a vital place for daily community life, facilitating education, social gatherings and meetings.

The report describes severe damage caused by the earthquakes: the collapse of the church’s central vault, major failures in the north and south masonry walls, and the loss of much of the wooden roof structure. Cracks and structural instability remain visible throughout the building, including in the portico, bell tower, and surviving vaults.

The newly published report outlines a phased approach, starting with the need for urgent stabilisation of the Church of St. Georgios (including the installation of protective scaffolding and roofing, some of which has already been implemented as of late 2025). Second, the report suggests the need for a detailed technical investigation to better understand the building and surrounding areas to avoid further destruction in the eventuality of another earthquake. Third, building a better understanding of the church’s construction phases and structural evolution through comprehensive documentation. Finally, implementing a plan for long-term rehabilitation.

The report builds on a mission to the site conducted in February 2025, during which experts from Europa Nostra met with local authorities, academics and community representatives.

The mission was undertaken to assess the impact of the earthquakes not only on the church but also on another significant heritage landmark, the Iron Gate of Antioch, which was also included among the 7 Most Endangered 2024 list. Through on-site inspections, technical evaluations, and consultations with local stakeholders, the experts examined the extent of the damage and the urgent conservation needs of both sites.
