Closing Conference of IMPACTOUR Project in Madrid, 20-21 June 2023

In January 2020, the 12 partners from across Europe of the IMPACTOUR project met in Lisbon to embark upon an ambition to help manage sustainable cultural tourism. Within two months, all assumptions about tourism were challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. Suddenly, ‘sustainable tourism’ was ‘0 tourism’. It was the most dramatic demonstration of the relationship between tourism and sustainability, and therefore the need for informed, effective destination management.

Europa Nostra has been a partner in this venture, for we represent a diverse spectrum of tourism communities and enterprises in which cultural heritage is the motivation, environment and spectacle of traditions and festivals.

‘IMPACTOUR’, as the name suggests, is a project about how a more reliable understanding of cultural tourism can inform decision-making to reduce pressure, enhance marginal locations, and improve integration of tourism within economies and communities. IMPACTOUR received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

At the Closing Conference of the IMPACTOUR Project in Madrid on 20 and 21 June, the IMPACTOUR Tool will be revealed and its role explained.
