ICCROM International Conference ‘Heritage Based Climate Action’

The International Virtual Conference ‘Heritage Based Climate Action’ organised by the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), will take place from 25 March to 27 March 2024, online.

The three-day conference is organised within the framework of ICCROM First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis programme. It will present transformative actions undertaken as part of the Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action project launched by this programme. Five heritage places affected by climate-related disasters and conflicts will be discussed: Jodhpur in India, Kasese in Uganda, Rashid in Egypt, Ubatuba in Brazil, and Tuti Island in Sudan.

The event programme is divided between stakeholder roundtables, ignite talks, video presentations, and reflection sessions, all guided by three interconnected themes:

  • Tracking loss and damage to cultural heritage in the face of climate change
  • Indigenous knowledge, traditional practices, and worldviews – A source for transformative climate action
  • An integrated approach towards disaster risk reduction, peacebuilding, and climate action

The aim of this conference is to highlight key findings, disseminate tools and strategies, share best practices, and engage stakeholders to integrate culture-based climate action into local, regional, and national climate adaptation plans.

ICCROM, an Associate Organisation of Europa Nostra based in Italy, is an intergovernmental organisation promoting the conservation of all forms of cultural heritage in every region of the world.
