Past:Forward Conference – Reflect, rethink, remember

The Past:Forward Conference, the international event about commemoration and remembrance, will be hosted on 9-11 September 2019 in Waalre and Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The conference will bring together young & emerging professionals (18-35 years old) and established professionals from all over Europe who are specialised, involved or interested in this theme. The conference is organised by Erfgoed Brabant in collaboration with Brabant Remembers.

Reflect > Rethink > Remember

The Past:Forward Conference will mark the start of the celebration of 75 years of freedom in Brabant. In 1944 the southern part of The Netherlands was liberated from the Nazi-German occupation during the Second World War. Throughout Europe, the lives of people have been changed forever by decisions that were made at the time, which still resonate today. In most European countries, commemorations have since been organised every year at fixed times according to a largely fixed set-up.

During the conference, this year is considered a turning point. We will analyze the established ways of commemorating and together we will debate possible new approaches, in order to build future forms of commemorating and celebrating which can be used after 2019. We will investigate this theme within a broader European context.
