The House of European History in dialogue with Europa Nostra

On 10 January 2013, Europa Nostra participated actively in the meeting organised in Brussels by the House of European History for the main European professional networks active in the fields of museums, heritage and history education. This event was the occasion for the Academic Project Team to present the progress made and plans ongoing for the House of European History project, including the permanent exhibition tracing the history of Europe as a whole, with a particular focus on the 20th century, and to explore the possibilities of cooperation with the European networks concerned in the medium and long term.

Concerning the architectural and heritage dimension of the House of European History to be located in the Eastman Building, Europa Nostra was pleased to have facilitated the organisation of a meeting on 18 December 2012 between Mr Pöttering, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the team of the House of European History, and heritage NGOs based in Brussels.

The civil society representatives had the opportunity to expose their concerns regarding the existing plans for the renovation and extension of the Eastman building for the needs of the future House of European History and also regarding the impact which this significant project will have on the sustainable future of the protected area of the Parc Léopold. While fully supporting the overall aim of the House of European History project, the NGOs have also written to EP President Schultz, urging the European Parliament to initiate, together with the City and Region of Brussels, a close and regular dialogue and partnership with local heritage NGOs concerning any further developments related to the Park Léopold area, including the House of European History.
