Notre Dame Tragedy: a personal loss for every European

Europa Nostra, the Voice of cultural heritage in Europe, wishes to express its deepest sympathy and immense sadness following yesterday’s fire that devastated Notre Dame of Paris.

Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra, declared:
“This tragedy means a personal loss for every European, since this cathedral is a unique symbol of our common history and culture. It shows the great vulnerability of our historical monuments, but also underlines how important it is to join our efforts and resources to preserve this unique heritage and transmit it to the new generations”.

Europa Nostra is determined to join the huge solidarity movement which we have been witnessing in France, Europe and the entire world since the very first moments of the outbreak of the fire. We wish to contribute to the huge effort for the reconstruction and restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral. We will mobilise all our members and our networks to take part in the necessary fund raising.  This engagement will be highlighted during the European Heritage Congress which we intend to organise in Paris at the end of October 2019.

Plácido Domingo, as well as the members of the Europa Nostra Council, Board and International Secretariat convey to the people of Paris and to all French citizens their deepest sympathy and their solidarity in these times of national grief.

To facilitate the fund raising in favour of the reconstruction of Notre-Dame of Paris, the French Government set up a common portal www.rebatirnotredame.gouv.fr which federates the four establishments and foundations of public utility above authorised to collect donations. See their press release.
