Europa Nostra has been alerted to the preparatory works being carried out by Gabriel Resources and later by the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC) for the development of large-scale open cast mining at Rosia Montana, Romania.
On 30 November 2010, Europa Nostra together with our Member Organisation Pro Patrimonio and Romanian MEP Darciana Sârbu, organised a public hearing in Brussels to listen to the different stakeholders’ views and ambitions for Rosia Montana. Europa Nostra supports the Joint Standing Committee of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for the relation with UNESCO, the Romanian National Commission on Historic Monuments, the Romanian Academy, and ICOMOS International in urging the Romanian government to include Rosia Montana in their Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. Europa Nostra also urges the Romanian government to envisage and implement a long-term sustainable development strategy for the inhabitants and the heritage and environment of the region.
