Europa Nostra proud to witness the Nobel Peace Prize presented to the EU

Europa Nostra, represented by its Executive President, Denis de Kergorlay, its Secretary General, Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, and the President of Europa Nostra Norway, Erik Schultz, was delighted to witness the European Union receive the Nobel Prize for Peace at a prestigious ceremony held in Oslo’s City Hall, on 10 December.

“We were very pleased to hear the European Commission’s President José Manuel Barroso and the European Council’s President Herman Van Rompuy declare, in their joint acceptance speech, that this was a prize not just for the project and the institutions embodying a common interest, but also for the 500 million citizens living in our Union. Europa Nostra was greatly honoured to witness such a landmark moment in the history of the EU”, commented Denis de Kergorlay.

The European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting reconciliation, democracy and human rights over six decades. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised the stabilising role the EU has played in transforming most of Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.

Why the European Union – with its peace and cultural project – deserves the Nobel Peace Prize? is, in fact, the title of an opinion piece recently written by Europa Nostra’s President Plácido Domingo, which was published both by the Portuguese leading daily newspaper Público and the Serbian leading daily newspaper Politika.
