“Cultural Heritage at the Heart of the Revival of the European Project”

10.00 to 19.00, Collège des Bernardins, 20, rue de Poissy, 75005 Paris

This major European Policy Debate took place at a particularly timely moment, only 2 days before the start of the work of the new European Commission.

It focused on some important challenges which cultural heritage faces in Europe and on the significance of our shared cultural heritage for the future of the European project.

It is inspired by the Berlin Call to Action “Cultural Heritage for the Future of Europe” which was presented at the European Cultural Heritage Summit on 22 June 2018 in Berlin and subsequent positive EU policy developments, including the adoption of major policy documents by the European Commission (European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage adopted in December 2018) and by the European Council (EU Strategic Agenda 2019-2024 adopted in June 2019).

This European Policy Debate was organised in partnership with the Fondation du Patrimoine and the Collège des Bernardins, with the support of the European Commission and the French Ministry of Culture.

High-level representatives of EU Institutions and French Government are expected to contribute to the Debate, namely:

Franck Riester, French Minister of Culture (Opening Speech)

Luca Jahier, President of the European Economic and Social Committee

Catherine Magnant, European Commission

Ambroise Fayolle, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank

Amélie de Montchalin, French Secretary of State for European Affairs (Closing Speech)

The Policy Debate focused on four themes:

1) the need for a stronger and renewed commitment by incoming EU institutions to keep cultural heritage where it belongs: on the top of the European Union’s political priorities and at the heart of the revival of the European Project.

2) the threats to cultural heritage caused by climate change (with a key intervention by our special guest speaker, Andrew Potts, Chairman of the ICOMOS Working Group on Climate Change and Cultural Heritage)

3) the need to boost financing for the benefit of endangered heritage (with the participation of the European Investment Bank Institute and several private foundations active in the field of cultural heritage).

4) What role does cultural heritage play in the formation of a “European way of life” and how can it be promoted today?

The Debate will take place in the inspiring historic setting of the Collège des Bernardins, located in the Vth arrondissement in Paris. It will be live streamed on our YouTube channel here.

In 2010, the comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation of this important historic building has received a EU/EN Grand Prix in category conservation.
