HANDOVER OF EUROPA NOSTRA'S PRESIDENCY AT TEATRO REAL IN MADRID

Europa Nostra’s former President, HRH the Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbón, is delighted with the recent election of Plácido Domingo as the new President of Europa Nostra. For Doña Pilar, Plácido Domingo is the ideal President for the new era of Europa Nostra: "The protection of architectural, cultural and natural heritage must now become a concern for all Europeans."
Plàcido Domingo: "I am very honoured to succeed to Doña Pilar. We now have the task to ensure that our architectural treasures and other cultural and natural assets are safeguarded by citizens and governments of Europe for present and future generations."
“Culture includes performing arts, architectural and natural heritage. We have to protect it all. It is the soul of Europe; it is the building block of our identity. " added Plácido Domingo.
The encounter between HRH the Infanta Doña Pilar and Plácido Domingo took place in Madrid on 22 July after the acclaimed performance of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, with Plácido Domingo singing the title role, at Teatro Real in Madrid (see photos).
The next day, Plácido Domingo met with representatives of the Europa Nostra’s Council and Board (Executive President Denis de Kergorlay, Executive Vice-President John Sell, Vice-President Irina Subotic, Treasurer Roelf Rogaar, Council member Santiago Ybarra y Churruca and Secretary General Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic) at the special dinner in the honour of Europa Nostra’s new President which was kindly hosted by Europa Nostra’s Vice-President and Board member, Alvaro Santa Cruz and his wife Queta at their home in Madrid. A number of prominent Spanish figures from the world of politics, economy and culture were also present at this dinner. “We must now make sure that cultural heritage is understood and fully exploited also as a source of employment and social cohesion in Europe. I am looking forward to contributing to spreading this key message“ stressed Plácido Domingo on this occasion.
